We Invite Junior High and High-School Students to Take Part In the

"Astronomy Adventure With Copernicus” Program
Summer Science camp
at the Kopernik Observatory in Vestal, NY

Eighteen contest winners will spend an expenses-paid week at the Kopernik Observatory and Science Center.* Awards will be granted in two age groups: 7-8 grade students and 9-12 grade students to a total of 18 summer-camp participants

In order to qualify for camp attendance, candidates must meet the following criteria:

• Their parents must be members of the PSFCU.
• Children must attend grade 7 through 12 (during the 2009/2010 school year).
• Children must write an essay, in Polish, on the following topic: “How can the example of Nicholas Copernicus and the financial support of Our Union assist me in becoming a scientist?” Completed essay must be mailed in an electronic format (MS Word or PDF file), together with address and telephone number, to marketing@psfcu.net, by April 30, 2010.
• Essays must be positively graded by the selection committee consisting of Polish school teachers.

Authors of the awarded essays will attend a week-long summer science camp at the Kopernik Observatory and Science Center during one of the following camp sessions: 7-8 grade students: July 25-31 or August 01-07, 2010; 9-12 grade students: July 11-17 or July 18 – 24,  2010.*

Parents are responsible for providing transportation for their children to and from the camp, and for completing all other formalities required by the Kopernik Observatory* (including having a medical form filled out by a physician). Qualified participants, for whom the PSFCU will cover the cost of attending the week-long camp, will be notified by phone and via e-mail. Special award ceremony will take place at 6:00 PM on May 20, 2010 at the PSFCU Headquarters located at 100 McGuinness Blvd. in Brooklyn.

The Observatory was established by the Kopernik Society*, a Polish-American organization which is currently tasked with its administration. For the last 30 years, it has been the best public observatory in North-Eastern United States.
The students will observe planets and moons of the Solar System, find out about the newest discoveries, study the possibility of space missions and the use of robots. They will attend sessions of solar astral-photography using the telescope and other devices. Other attractions are also planned. Accommodations will be provided at the dormitories of the nearby Binghamton University.
