Brooklyn, NY (July 12, 2006) - Continuing to advance the fortunes of its member families, the Polish & Slavic Federal Credit Union has awarded college scholarships totaling $300,000 to 176 students throughout the metropolitan area. The scholarship winners were announced today at the PSFCU’s Scholarship Award Ceremony held at the Polish Cultural Foundation of Clark, NJ.

The 30-year-old credit union, with more than $1 billion in assets, serves nearly 70,000 members of the Polish and Slavic communities throughout New York and New Jersey.

“As a credit union, we are more than a bank. Our mission centers on helping our members and their families. I believe that investing in education is one of the best and most effective services we can render to our member base. These scholarship recipients will one day assume a leadership role and their work will benefit the entire member community,” said Alicja Malecka, the CEO of the PSFCU. “Their success will be the success of our credit union.”

In total, the credit union awarded its scholarship dollars as part of two separate programs: The PSFCU Scholarship Program awarded 10 scholarships of $5,000, 60 scholarships of $2,000, and 20 scholarships of $1,500. The credit union also awarded 86 scholarships totaling $100,000 under the New York State Credit Union League program guidelines. (NYSCUL is the trade association for almost 600 not-for-profit, member-owned credit unions in the state of New York).

“To the best of my knowledge, this is an unprecedented program in terms of the breadth and scope undertaken by any ethnic credit union.  It is our largest scholarship program ever, and a testament to our commitment to our members,” said Krzysztof Matyszczyk, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the PSFCU. “Annually, we assist over 90 Polish parishes, schools and organizations, yet this program is one of the most significant and extensive of our endeavors."

Mr. Krzysztof Matyszczk, the Chairman of the Board of Directors
and Mr. Marian Ponanta, VP of Marketing of the PSFCU.

All recipients were required to be members of the PSFCU with an exceptional scholastic aptitude.  The winners of the PSFCU Scholarship Program were university-level students, while the NYSCUL awardees were chosen from among deserving college-bound seniors seeking to enroll in a two- or four-year accredited institution of higher learning.

One of the recipients, Klaudia Polak, was also awarded an additional NYSCUL scholarship for being among the most distinguished of all New York State credit union applicants participating in the program.

“Of course this scholarship is a tremendous financial help, but it carries greater weight as an honor,” said Klaudia.  “We certainly won’t disappoint those who put their trust in us. My parents worked hard for all they’ve attained, and the credit union has been a big part of that.  Once we gain the education we seek, we will make sure that our community is strong and vibrant.”

Polish & Slavic Federal Credit Union was founded in 1976 by a group of Polish immigrants to help other ethnic Poles obtain mortgages. It currently has 10 branches in New York and New Jersey, and an Operations Center in Fairfield, NJ. Ranked in the top 100 credit union, the PSFCU is the largest ethnic credit union in the country.
