10th Anniversary of the McGuinness Branch in Greenpoint
On October 1, the Polish & Slavic Federal Credit Union celebrated the tenth anniversary of its branch at 100 McGuinness Boulevard in New York’s Greenpoint. It was also the occasion for the inauguration of Polish Heritage Month.
Mayor of Cassino Giuseppe Golini Petrarcone's remarks
“We ought to be proud of what Poland and Polish people have contributed to culture, the economy and growth, not only economic growth, as well as the independence of the United States,” said Bogdan Chmielewski, PSFCU Chief Executive Officer. “I am referring to the generals: Tadeusz Kosciuszko and Kazimierz Pulaski, as well as to all of us, the residents of Greenpoint, Wallington, New Jersey, or Jackowo in Chicago, who work hard every day, put a great deal of effort into educating our children, and care for our homes. Those are components of Polish heritage in the United States, a heritage of which we should be proud and which we should nurture.”
Polish American Folk Dance Company's performance
The ceremony was attended by many representatives of the Polish community and the people of Greenpoint. Among them were veterans including Anthony Chroscielewski, who fought in the Battle of Monte Cassino, the commander of Polish Army Veterans District 2, scouts and Polish businessmen from Greenpoint. The special guest was Giuseppe Golini Petrarcone, the mayor of the Italian town of Cassino. “Thank you for what you have done for us, not only for the city of Cassino, but for all of Italy, because it was the Poles who liberated the city and contributed to the liberation of Italy. We are eternally grateful to you,” said the mayor of Cassino. In congratulating the achievements of our Credit Union, he gave Bogdan Chmielewski a special commemorative medal issued on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Monte Cassino.
A symbolic check to the organizers of Greenpoint's "Get To The 'Point 5K Run"
The Polish American Folk Dance Company performed several Polish dances, inviting our Credit Union management and the mayor of Cassino and his wife to dance. Earlier, the Slavic Arts Ensemble trio performed works of Polish classical music (Chopin, Moniuszko, Paderewski and Wieniawski). Our Credit Union representatives gave a symbolic check to the organizers of Greenpoint’s “Get To The 'Point 5K” annual run, which will be held on October 11 this year. At the end of the ceremony Anna Branas, Manager of the McGuinness Branch, cut the anniversary cake and the traditional Polish “Happy Birthday” was sung.
